How to Crochet

How to: Single Crochet, Half Double Crochet, and Double Crochet

When you are first starting to crochet, three of the main stitches you will be working with are Single Crochet (SC), Half Double Crochet (HDC), and Double Crochet (DC). Please keep in mind for this tutorial I will be working with the US versions of these Stitches. If you are using a pattern that is from the UK make sure to take a look at a conversion chart because their DC is our SC and so forth. It can get very confusing, I learned that the hard way!

Terms to know!
Working yarn
– the yarn that leads back to the ball of yarn
Yarn over – Taking the working yarn and laying it over the hook. I do it from the furthest side of the hook to the closest side because it is easier to catch the yarn with your hook.

To complete a single crochet (sc)

  • Start by inserting your hook into the stitch. If you are working into a chain, it will be just one strand of yarn.
  • Yarn over with your working yarn.
  • Pull the hook back out of the stitch. You should have 2 loops on your hook.
  • Yarn over with your working yarn and pull that loop through the other 2 loops.

To complete a half double crochet (hdc)

  • Start by yarning over with your working yarn.
  • Insert your hook into the stitch and yarn over with your working yarn.
  • Pull the hook back out of the stitch. You should have 3 loops on your hook.
  • Yarn over with your working yarn and pull that loop through the other 3 loops.

To complete a double crochet (dc)

  • Start by yarning over with your working yarn.
  • Insert your hook into the stitch and yarn over with your working yarn.
  • Pull the hook back out of the stitch. You should have 3 loops on your hook.
  • Yarn over with your working yarn and pull that loop though the first 2 loops.
  • Yarn over again and pull that loop through the remaining 2 loops.
