Mermaid on Land – FREE PATTERN

Everybody seems to want to be a mermaid, but all this poor mermaid wants is to be a human. Take this doll on lots of land bound adventures so she can explore the world she so desperately wants to be a part of!

This pattern is between beginner and intermediate and takes at least 3 hours to complete. The finished doll is roughly 4 inches tall and should be able to stand on her own. Lastly, the pattern is written using United States crochet terms.

What You Need

• Yarn weight 4
  • Cream Color (Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek, Cream)
  • Black (Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek, Black)
  • White (Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek, White)
  • Blue
  • Red (Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek, Red)
• 12mm safety eyes
• Crochet hook size 3.5mm
• Yarn Needle
• Scissors
• Stuffing

Pattern

Head/Body

Using Cream Yarn, ch 2, sc 6 into second ch from hook

R1: Increase inc in each sc (12 stitches)

R2: *sc, inc* repeat x6 (18 sts)

R3: *sc 2, inc* repeat x6 (24 sts)

R4: *sc 3, inc* repeat x6 (30 sts)

R5: *sc 4, inc* repeat x6 (36 sts)

R6-9: sc in each sc (36 sts per round, 4 rounds)

R10: *sc 4, decrease (dec)* repeat x6 (30 sts)

R11: *sc 3, dec* repeat x6 (24 sts)

R12: *sc 2, dec* repeat x6 (18 sts)

Place safety eyes Between R8 and R9, about 7 spaces apart. Begin stuffing

R13: *sc, dec* repeat x6 (12 sts)

R14: *sc 2, dec* repeat x3 (9 sts)

R15: sc in each sc (9 sts)

Switch to white yarn

R16: sc in each sc (9 sts)

Switch to black yarn

R17-19: sc in each sc (9 sts per round, 3 rounds)

Switch to blue yarn

R20: *sc 2, inc* repeat x3 (12 sts)

R21: sc in each sc (12 sts)

R22: *sc, inc* repeat x6 (18 sts)

R23: sc in each sc (18 sts)

R24: *sc 2, inc* repeat x6 (24 sts)

R25: sc in each sc (24 sts)

R26: sc 3, inc* repeat x6 (30 sts)

Tie off.

Body Base

Using Blue Yarn ch 2, sc 6 into second ch from hook

R1: Inc in each sc (12 sts)

R2: *sc, inc* repeat x6 (18 sts)

R3: *sc 2, inc* repeat x6 (24 sts)

If you do not feel like your base is large enough to fit into the bottom of the skirt do one more round (same as R4 of Head/Body).

Tie off

Attach the base to the bottom of the Head/Body and stuff to medium firmness. Do not over stuff because it will make the head look funny and the bottom won’t be flat. To help ensure the base stays flat, use the initial tale from your first ch 2 of the base and pull it up through the center of the doll

Hair

Using Red Yarn ch 2, sc 6 into second ch from hook

R1: Inc in each sc (12 sts)

R2: *sc, inc* repeat x6 (18 sts)

R3: *sc 2, inc* repeat x6 (24 sts)

R4: *sc 3, inc* repeat x6 (30 sts)

R5: *sc 4, inc* repeat x6 (36 sts)

R6: sc 9, hdc 27 (36 sts)

R7: sc 9, hdc 27 (36 sts)

The next row will be the bangs and curls so I break it up a bit so its easier to read

R8: sc 9,

Bangs: ch 21, in second ch from hook inc, sc, inc, sc, hdcinc, hdc, dc, tc, dtc, dtc, ddtc, ddtc, ddtc, ddtc, dtc, tc, dc, hdc, sc

Curls: slip stitch in next sc, *ch 21, starting in second ch from hook [inc, sc]x5, sc x10, skip 1 sc, slip stitch* repeat 13 times

Tie off. Sew hair to the head of the doll.

Arms (Make 2)

Using Cream Yarn, ch 2, sc 4 into second ch from hook.

Switch to white yarn

R1-3: sc in each sc (4 sts per row)

Tie off leaving a tail for sewing. Sew arms to either side of the body.

Bow

Using Blue Yarn, Ch 31 starting in second ch from hook *sc 5, hdc, dc, dc, tc, tc, tc, tc, dc, dc, hdc*x2 slip stitch to first sc to make a circle And work the next two rows in a round

R1: *sc 5, hdc, dc, dc, tc, tc, tc, tc, dc, dc, hdc*x2 

R2: *sc 5, hdc, dc, dc, tc, tc, tc, tc, dc, dc, hdc*x2 . Tie off. Squish flat and a bow tie shape should be created.

Using Blue yarn, Ch 12, in third ch from hook dc. Dc all the way to the end. Tie off leaving a tail for sewing. Wrap this piece around the small portion of the bow shape and sew ends together. Sew the bow to the center back of the head.
