Creepy Clown – Free Pattern

I just want to start this by saying I DON’T do scary movies. It is not my thing, but I got this little cutie as a custom order and so many people loved him that I am taking the time to type out the pattern. So please if you love scary movies, or just this fun demonic little guy, share or pin this pattern!

This pattern is intermediate and takes at least 6 hours to complete. The finished doll is roughly 4 inches tall and cannot stand on its own. Lastly, the pattern is written using United States crochet terms.

What You Need

• Yarn weight 4 (I use Yarn Bee Soft and sleek for all except the grey, that is I Love This Yarn)
  • White
  • Light Grey
  • Cream
  • Red
  • Black
• Yarn Weight 3 (Yarn Bee Sweet Minis)
  • Orange
• 12mm safety eyes
• Crochet hook
  • 3.5mm(use this hook unless otherwise indicated)
  • 2.25mm(this hook is only used for the hair)
• Yarn Needle
• Scissors
• Stuffing
• Pins (for the hair)
• Paper Clip (to make the balloon)

Pattern

Head/ Body

For the head I do recommend using staggering to minimize weird bumps. If you have never used this technique check out THIS blog post by me!

Using White Yarn, ch 2, sc 6 into second ch from hook

R1: Inc in each sc (12 sts)

R2: *sc, inc* repeat x6 (18 sts)

R3: *sc 2, inc* repeat x6 (24 sts)

R4: *sc 3, inc* repeat x6 (30 sts)

R5: *sc 4, inc* repeat x6 (36 sts)

R6-10: sc in each sc (36 sts per round, 5 rounds)

R11: *sc 4, dec* repeat x6 (30 sts)

R12: *sc 3, dec* repeat x6 (24 sts)

R13: *sc 2, dec* repeat x6 (18 sts)

Place safety eyes between R8 and 9 about 7 stitches apart. If visually that is too low or too high adjust accordingly, you will need to add the red yarn later so there needs to be room. Begin stuffing

R14: *sc, dec* repeat x6 (12 sts)

R15: *sc 2, dec* repeat x3 (9 sts)

R16: sc in each sc (9 sts)

Switch to Light Grey Yarn

R17: *sc 2, inc* repeat x3 (12 sts)

R18: sc in each sc (12 sts)

R19: in back loops only *sc, inc* x6 (18 sts)

R20: sc in each sc (18 sts)

R21: in back loops only *sc 2, inc* x6 (24 sts)

Arms (make 2)

Using White yarn, ch 2 and sc 5 into second ch from hook

Switch to Light Grey Yarn

R1-4: Sc in each sc (5 sts per) Tie off.

Legs (make 2)

Using Light Grey Yarn, ch 2 and sc 6 into second ch from hook

R1-5: sc in each sc (6 sts per) Tie off.

Collar

Using Cream Yarn, ch 41

R1: In second ch from hook sc across ch 1 and turn

R2: *sc, inc using dc* repeat x20. Tie off leaving a long tail

Weave tail through original chain and scrunch to create the rippled collar. Adjust accordingly so the collar fits around the neck of the clown.

Sew together the parts you have made so far. I recommend attaching the legs first, I sew the legs together and then sew them inside of the “skirt”. Next attach the collar around the neck. Finally the arms on either side of the body. If you attach the arms first you may do them too high and have a hard time placing the collar.

Hair

The hair is made in 2 piece. First you make the front edge that has the curls and then you make a wig cap to fill in the back. I include picture to help you to create the shape how I did. This part is the most difficult so be a little creative and try not to get frustrated.

Piece 1

Using hook size 2.25mm and Orange Yarn, ch 41

So you don’t have to read this in paragraph form I am going to do it in a list format.

Starting in second ch from hook –

1. sc
2. hdc

5. tc
6. ch 3, slip stitch (now begins first set of curls)
7. ch 5 [starting in second ch from hook sc 4], slip stitch
8. ch 7 [starting in second ch from hook sc 6], slip stitch
9. ch 7 [starting in second ch from hook sc 6], slip stitch
10. ch 5 [starting in second ch from hook sc 4], slip stitch
11. sc in next 6 ch
12. ch 6 [starting in second ch from hook sc 5], slip stitch
13. ch 6 [starting in second ch from hook sc 5], slip stitch
14. ch 8 [starting in second ch from hook sc 7], slip stitch
15. ch 8 [starting in second ch from hook sc 7], slip stitch
16. ch 10 [starting in second ch from hook sc 9], slip stitch Now you are going to do the same thing again but backwards
17. ch 10 [starting in second ch from hook sc 9], slip stitch
18. ch 8 [starting in second ch from hook sc 7], slip stitch
19. ch 8 [starting in second ch from hook sc 7], slip stitch
20. ch 6 [starting in second ch from hook sc 5], slip stitch
21. ch 6 [starting in second ch from hook sc 5], slip stitch
22. sc in next 6 ch
23. ch 5 [starting in second ch from hook sc 4], slip stitch
24. ch 7 [starting in second ch from hook sc 6], slip stitch
25. ch 7 [starting in second ch from hook sc 6], slip stitch
26. ch 5 [starting in second ch from hook sc 4], slip stitch
27. ch 3
28. tc
29. dc
30. dc
31. hdc
32. sc and tie off leaving a long tail for sewing

At this point go ahead and pin it to the head

Piece 2

Using 3.5mm hook and Orange yarn, ch 2 and sc 6 into second ch from hook

R1: Inc in each sc (12 sts)

R2: *sc, inc* repeat x6 (18 sts)

R3: *2 sc, inc* repeat x6 (24 sts)

R4: *3 sc, inc* repeat x6 (30 sts)

R5: *3 sc, inc* repeat x6 (36 sts)

R6: *4 sc, inc* repeat x6 (42 sts)

R7:(there is no increasing in this round) ch 2, 2 tc, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, hdc, dc, tc, dc, hdc, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 3 tc, dc, hdc, 16 sc, hdc, dc, slip stitch to original ch 2. Tie off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Now pin this piece to the head. You will need to pull and stretch and squish a little to make it fit perfectly.

Once you have it pinned the way you like go ahead and sew it down!

Red Accents

I used one long piece of red yarn to do all of the accents. Using your yarn needle sew up through the back of the blouse. I do the eyes first, and you want the yarn to go 2 rows above the eye and 2 rows below. Next I sewed down through the middle of the head and body to do the “button” in between R19&20. Then down to the feet.

Balloon

Using Red Yarn, ch 2, sc 6 in second ch from hook

R1: Inc in each sc (12 sts)

R2: sc in each sc (12 sts)

R3: *2 sc, dec* repeat x3 (9 sts)

R4: *sc, dec* repeat X3 (6 sts)

R5: Dec in each sc (3 sts)

R6: sc in each sc (3 sts) Tie off

Balloon String

I insert the paper clip into the balloon and bend it a bunch so it is secure. Then insert the paper clip into the arm of the doll and bend it a bunch to secure it. I then use my yarn needle to take a piece of black yarn through the arm and out the same hole the paper clip was inserted in, wrap the black yarn tightly around the paper clip to cover it. Sew the end up through the balloon and secure it.
