FREE PATTERN – Island Girl

I love the movie Moana. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry, and I feel like the overall message of the movie is super powerful. I am glad that Disney has created another female lead that is strong and independent (like Mulan, Tiana, and Merida).

When I first started crocheting, Moana was always my go to background movie, or background music, so it was only appropriate that I created a pattern for her! I have made Moana several times, and she is definitely my favorite pattern to crochet. She is fairly simple, using just a few colors and simple stitches. She just requires a bit of patience (especially for the hair).

Now this specific pattern is based on when she out on her raft with her hair tied up in a bun. So she is in her standard outfit, nothing fancy about it.

What you need –

Yarn – Light Brown, Cream, Coral, and Black

Crochet Hook size 3.5 or an E/4

Scissors

10 mm safety eyes

Sewing needle

Optional – pins, stitch markers, snacks, and tunes

 

Head –

Note: I crochet continuously from head to the bottom of the skirt, so I break it up so you know what portion you are on, but the row numbers will continue to increase because you are not going to tie off.

With Skin Tone Yarn chain 2

R1: Single crochet 6 into second chain from the hook (6 stitches)

R2: [Increase] x6 (12 sts)

R3: [SC 1 into next SC, increase] x6 (18 sts)

R4: [SC 1 into next 2 SC, increase] x6 (24 sts)

R5: [SC 1 into next 3 SC, increase] x6 (30 sts)

R6: [SC 1 into next 4 SC, increase] x6 (36 sts)

R7-9: [SC 1 into each SC] (36 sts)

R10: [SC 1 into next 4 SC, decrease] x6 (30 sts)

R11: [SC 1 into next 3 SC, decrease] x6 (24 sts)

R12: [SC 1 into next 2 SC, decrease] x6 (18 sts)

Insert eyes in between rows 8 and 9 about 7 stitches apart.

R13: [SC 1 into next SC, decrease] x6 (12 sts)

Stuff head.

R14: [Decrease] x6 (6 sts)

 

Body –

R15: [SC 1 into next SC, increase] x3 (9 sts)

R16: [SC 1 into each SC] (9 sts) Switch to Coral Yarn

R17-18: [SC 1 into each SC] (9 sts) Switch to Skin Tone Yarn

 

Skirt –

R18: With Cream Yarn, SC 2 in the front loop of each SC 

Note: I have you crochet into the front loops so it is easier to attach the legs

R19: SC 1 into each SC (18 sts)

R20: [SC 1 into next 2 SC, increase] x6 (24 sts)

R21:  SC 1 into each SC (24 sts)

Tie off

Using Coral Yarn, chain 36. This is used for the belt that you wrap around her waist.

 

Arms (make 2)-

With Skin Tone Yarn chain 2

R1:  SC 4 into second chain from the hook (4 sts)

R2-4: SC 1 into each single crochet (4 sts)

Tie Off

 

Legs (make 2) –

With Skin Tone Yarn chain 2

R1: SC 5 into second chain from the hook (4 sts)

R2-5: SC 1 into each SC (5 sts)

Tie Off

 

Hair–

With Black Yarn chain 38

In second chain from the hook, slip stitch

[Chain 30 (slip stitch does not count as a chain.)

In second chain from the hook single crochet 2

Single crochet 2 in next 29 chains

Skip chain, slip stitch in next chain] repeat 18 times

Tie off, leaving a really long tail

 

Sew to head. I typically go around twice just to make sure it is even and secure. Pull the extra yarn up through the center of the head. Wrap the yarn around all the curls towards the bottom and pull tight to make a ponytail. Sew through the head to secure. Weave the yarn through the ends of all of the curls, pull tight and then sew down through the head to create the bun.

           

 

Now, sew the body together. So sew the legs to the inside loops of R18, being sure to stuff the legs and body to a medium firmness. Next sew the arms to the sides of the body, above the coral band. Finally attach the belt.
