FREE PATTERN – The Mouse Keychain

I got the idea for this pattern this past week while I was working on my giveaway dwarves. They were small, quick, and easy – some of my favorite qualities in a pattern! I don’t always have a lot of time (and patience) and it always feels so good to finish a project! This project also does not require a ton of materials, and you don’t have to make it into a keychain. I just thought that it added a nice touch!

This pattern is intended to be a simple design that any beginner can make, BUT still is Disney themed and fun! I highly recommend checking out this blog (Click Here) by NeedleNoodles for making jogless stripes. This pattern works in a spiral, but could be modified to work in the round. Either way, the tutorial is super helpful for not having messy transitions between colors!

Pattern notes –

The final product should be about the size of a champagne cork.

The stitches should be tight in order to hold the stuffing in, and maintain the shape.

Time commitment: I was able to make this item while watching 1 episode of Vampire Diaries. The first time may take a little longer to get the hang of, but really no more than an hour and a half.

That’s all I need to say about that so let’s get on with it!

What you need:

Yarn, weight 4 –  Yellow (I use Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek Low-Pill Fiber, Mustard), Red (Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek Low-Pill Fiber, Red), and Black (Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek Low-Pill Fiber, Black)

Crochet Hook, 3.5mm

Yarn Needle – I like the kind that has an angled tip, it is easier to sew with and tends so be a little sharper on the end.

Keychain – I got mine at Michael’s for about $3 for a pack of 12. They are located in the jewelry section.

Needle Nose Pliers – This is for attaching the keychain.

How to Make

Body:

R1: With Yellow yarn, ch 2, sc 6 in second ch from the hook (leave a long tail)

R2: sc 2 in in each sc (12 stitches)

R3: With Red yarn, *sc 1, sc 2 in next sc* repeat 6 times (18 stitches)

R4-6: SC in each sc (18 stitches per row)

R7: With Black yarn, sc in each sc (18 stitches)

R8-10: SC in each sc (18 stitches per row)

R11: *sc, dec* repeat 6 times (12 stitches). This is a good time to stuff the item.

R12: *dec* repeat 6 times (6 stitches)

Tie off and close opening. Using the long tail from R1, sew up through the bottom so that the butt flattens out.

Ears (make 2):

R1: With Black yarn, ch 2, sc 6 into second ch from hook

R2: SC 2 in first 5 sc (10 stitches) – I purposefully did not complete the circle so one side would be flat. This is the side you will sew to the head.

Tie off

Sew the ears to the top of the head, leaving enough room in between for the keychain.

Using needle nose pliers, open the bottom circle of the keychain, attach the open circle to the top of the head and then close the circle again so it is secure.

And there you have it! Now you can add your wonderful Mickey accessory to purses, backpacks, keys and more! Be careful though, he isn’t invincible!
